What is addiction?

When habits or behaviour such as drug use or drinking come to dominate daily life and people find themselves powerless to stop the chaos then it is very likely that that person is suffering from an active addiction.

Addiction can be found in all layers of society. Nearly everybody knows somebody who has an addiction or dependency problem. Addictions UK have developed a treatment programme that offers immediate help and that can be delivered over the phone. The unique one-to-one programme is tailored to the individual, offers complete anonymity and an immediate start.

In today's society, people are submitted to strong pressures and are inclined to set themselves high standards. It's not unusual for people to keep pushing themselves to deliver and not rest when necessary. The need to stay 'in control' can be incredibly stressful and, as a result, people often look for a release...some find it in alcohol, drugs, or other compulsive behaviour.

These substances or habits enable the person to find a relief, escape, or way out - but only briefly. Increasing quantities of the substance are needed to reach the psychological and physical needs; in the end, they are hooked.

Addictions can be formed to any behaviour that allows people to escape from life and its problems.

For many people who have successfully held a position at work, in the community, family or even in the public eye, it's difficult to admit to being unable to find a solution and they are often too ashamed to ask for help. Traditional treatment programmes may be unacceptable due to lack of confidence in the programme delivery, substantial waiting times and high costs, the poor reputation of some programmes or fear of loss of anonymity.

Many people find it difficult to see addiction as a disease but it is just that - a progressive disease with the craving for substances and behaviours growing over time.

Addicts have no control over their addiction; they are powerless over the craving for stimulating or numbing substances or activities. They tend to mislead themselves and those around them by drinking or using in secret; often this behaviour is not part of their character.

In the long term the addict is at risk of losing everything which they hold dear to them: partners, family, friends, health, job and ethical values.
